Project Title: Dream Season

Artist: Shawn Hunt

Exhibition Venue: Equinox Gallery, Vancouver, Canada

Exhibition Overview:
Dream Season is a solo exhibition by Heiltsuk artist Shawn Hunt, presented at Equinox Gallery from October 17 to November 16, 2024. The exhibition features a series of surreal scenes where moments from Hunt's life are reimagined as present-day daydreams infused with Indigenous traditions. Illuminated by moonlight, the figures in his compositions are suspended between the past, present, and future, resisting singular interpretation.

Hunt employs traditional Northwest Coast design principles, using unbroken outlines to weave various patterned motifs into figures. His work often intertwines human and animal forms, sometimes mythological, representing a constant flux between human and spirit realms. This approach celebrates the fundamental characteristics of traditional design while adapting the subjects to a contemporary context.

This exhibition contributes to the ongoing dialogue about the evolution of Indigenous art and its place within the broader art world.
