Villa Savoye
Original Creator : Le Corbusier
When : 1929
Where : France
This is for you if : Into Architecture
Cultural Significance : Its a seminal work of modern architecture that epitomizes the International Style with its emphasis on functionality, simplicity, and the use of new materials. It introduced the concept of the “Five Points of Architecture,” which includes the use of pilotis (supports), flat roof terraces, open floor plans, horizontal windows, and free façades. By embodying these principles, Villa Savoye revolutionized architectural design and influenced countless architects and buildings in the 20th century and beyond.
Personal Rating: 9/10. In person it’s actually fairly big. The photos taken of it make it look considerably small- almost like a little box house. While on site, it feels very grand and I think it’s primarily to do with the long winding rooms and wide windows that frame each view (as noted in LC’s 5 points write up).
